How the score is calculated
Score out of 10 = 60% price (relative to the cheapest in the table) + 15% network (5G listed, network named) + 10% hotspot use + 15% range of options (unlimited available, number of durations).
A travel eSIM is mainly for data
The vast majority of travel eSIMs are data-only plans: no local number, so no regular calls or texts. For most people that's not a problem: messaging apps (WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger, Signal and others) handle voice and video calls over data, in the United States like anywhere else. Some providers offer plans that include a number, but they're less common: the details are in their plan listings.
Keeping your usual number reachable
Your main SIM can stay active alongside the eSIM. You'll keep receiving calls and texts on your number, including bank verification codes. What those calls and texts cost abroad depends on your plan: check with your carrier before you leave. Above all, keep data roaming off on that line.
Settings that prevent nasty surprises
- Set the eSIM as your default line for data.
- Keep your usual line as the default for calls if you want to stay reachable on your number.
- Consider forwarding calls to voicemail if your carrier charges for incoming calls abroad.
- If your carrier supports Wi-Fi calling abroad, check the terms: they vary from plan to plan.
One thing to watch
In some countries, calls made through apps can be restricted or degraded. Check the situation for the United States before you go, and keep a fallback (texts from your usual line, Wi-Fi calling) if being able to call is essential.
What about texts?
Without a local number, a data eSIM can't send or receive SMS. Verification codes (bank, messaging, online services) keep arriving on your usual number, as long as your main SIM stays active. Where a service allows it, switching to app-based verification before you leave means you won't depend on SMS during the trip.
Set up your eSIM in 4 steps
- Make sure your phone is eSIM-compatible and unlocked.
- Buy the plan, then scan the QR code you receive (or install through the provider's app), on Wi-Fi.
- When you arrive, turn on the eSIM line for data, and turn on roaming for that line only.
- Keep your main SIM for calls and texts, with data roaming turned off.
